Running across just about every console imaginable, Banprestos series started out adapting different anime shows into a sequence of episodic turn-based battles but has since grown to include spinoffs starring original characters, mobile games and probably a pachinko machine or two.

So with that in mind, here are the best places to begin with this hot-blooded mecha mashup, updated for 2019.

The first, Super Robot Wars V, begins on a ruined Earth ravaged by war, with the survivors taking to space in search of a new hope.

The strategy RPG battles weave together stories from anime series like Space Battleship Yamato, Cross Ange, and The Brave Express Might Gaine, along with many returning robots from other entries such as Full Metal Panic and Evangelion.

Although there are many recycled animations from previous games, the elaborate cutscenes used for battles look great on the PlayStation 4 and Vita, and even use a nice mix of 2D and 3D animation in the Yamatos attacks.

Though theres plenty of depth with optional mission objectives and branching paths, the lower difficulty level in Super Robot Wars V makes it a solid place to start.

Given the short time between entries, its unsurprising that many of these travellers also appeared in Super Robot Wars V, although there are a number of new entries like Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Buddy Complex and Gundam: Reconguista in G.

Notably, a significant amount of the games story revolves around Mashin Hero Wataru, a comedic robot show from the early 90s, making it a more light-hearted game than Super Robot Wars V.

All of the systems are similar, though your protagonist of choice can now use magical dogmas to turn the tide in battle.

Though I cant vouch for an unreleased game, it contains an interesting mix of popular series like Magic Knight Rayearth, G Gundam, Gaogaigar, Gun X Sword, Captain Harlock and Cowboy Bebop.

Yes, those last two sci-fi series dont really have any robots, but whos complaining If it matches the quality of the last few entries, Super Robot Wars T might be worth waiting for.

To me the big draw of the Super Robot Wars series is seeing how the games adapts different anime storylines and has the huge cast of iconic characters interact with each other.

These three are thr only games where youll get to experience that kind of fanservice with an official English translation, so theyre worth checking out.

Unfortunately, theyre only available in certain Asian countries, so its difficult to import them without, say, paying a significant markup at a website that currently owes me a large sum of money.

Im sure a lot of other people thought the same way, since this pair of PSP games drew players in with what are still some of the most popular mecha anime series out there like Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Gundam Wing and Macross Frontier.

Even a lot of the older series included like Votoms and Tetsujin-28 hadnt been in a Super Robot Wars game before so it still has an attractive line-up of characters and robots.

Although several characters and series from the first Super Robot Wars Z show up, the story is largely self-contained just dont expect to understand all of it.

Unlike V, this entry is only available in Japanese, but its easy enough to play provided you learn at least enough Japanese to memorise the menus and different abilities (the wiki is your friend).

It helps that the gameplay mechanics are much simpler than V and the difficulty level is very low.
